BRUSSELS: The European Union (EU) and the United States will debate next Wednesday on the possible ban on in-flight laptops and tablets in certain flights from EU, according to the European Commission (EC).

‘This Commission will host high-level political and technical talks with US authorities on Wednesday to jointly assess new threats and work from a common prospect,’ the Community Executive spokeswoman Margaritis Schinas stated.

Last Friday, EC officials and European ministers called upon John Kelly -US Secretary of Homeland Security- to hold the aforementioned meeting in order to debate on the controversial issue.

For the time being, it is unknown which nations will be subject to this new restriction and whether tablets will be included in this measure that might affect some US companies.

If confirmed, that provision would be added to the veto announced in March on barring electronic devices, but cell phones, from the cabins of ten international airports in eight Muslim-majority nations: Jordan, Kuwait, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Qatar and United Arab Emirates.

On this occasion, the United States and United Kingdom claimed that such a ban was due to some security reasons.
