PIA Cuts | Salaries, Benefits of Privileged Staff

October 29, 2020 by holidayweekly

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has decided to cut the salaries and benefits of 450 pilots, 400 engineers and 27 finance department officials in a move geared at balancing the airline’s more privileged class allowances and benefits with those of other employees.

The head of PIA’s human resources department issued a notification regarding the reduction in benefits on Wednesday.

According to the notification, captains will be paid a 50-hour guarantee allowance instead of 75 hours. Previously, pilots were paint the guaranteed 75-hour allowance even if they did not fly.

The PIA said the allowance will now only be paid after completing 50 flying hours a month. Applications for illness for more than five days at a time will not be acceptable without a medical board.

Higher salaries and privileges for privileged engineers and employees attached to the finance department have also been integrated. The notification said concessions were cut in the wake of the financial crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

PIA spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez Khan said that many PIA employees had had a longstanding demand for equal concessions.

He said the privileged and higher paid employees had gradually increased their privileged due to their power.

Many PIA employees were uneasy about government audits and Supreme Court orders were also cited in this regard.

He said that there are 450 pilots, 400 engineers and 27 finance department officials who will be affected by the reduction in salaries and benefits, but cabin crew are not among them.

France Announces | 2nd National Lockdown From October 30

October 29, 2020 by holidayweekly

PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron today announced a new nationwide lockdown, claiming that 400,000 people will die of coronavirus if the country does nothing to control a second wave that will be ‘more deadly than the first.

The national measures will take effect from Friday morning, October 30 until December 1 and are considered to be ‘more flexible’ than the country’s first lockdown, with all public services, schools and essential workplaces to remain open.

But people on the streets will still have to carry documents justifying their reason for leaving home – that will be subject to police checks – and bars and restaurants will close. State-approved for leaving home include buying essential goods, seeking medical attention or taking a daily one-hour allocation of exercise.

Macron called the new restrictions ‘heartbreaking’ but said he ‘could never standby and see hundreds of thousands of its citizens die.’

He told the country: “I decided that it was necessary to insist on a lockdown throughout the country from Friday. We’ve already reached 58 per cent capacity in IC units. In numerous places we have seen lifesaving operations delayed. And 9,000 patients will be in ICU by mid-November – that’s our maximum capacity in France.”

The measures will be in place until at least December 1, when they will be reviewed. Macron says that non-essential shops would be allowed to open within the next 15 days if the situation improves. Currently France’s daily infection rates stand at around 35,000 – which must fall to 5,000 for this to happen.

Macron said: “The virus is spreading across France at a speed that even the most pessimistic did not predict.

‘As elsewhere in Europe, we are overwhelmed by a second wave that will probably be more difficult and deadly than the first,” Macron said.

‘If we did nothing… within a few months we would have at least 400,000 additional deaths,” he said.

France on Tuesday reported 523 new deaths from coronavirus and 33,417 new confirmed cases over the previous 24 hours, the highest daily death toll since April, when the virus was at its most severe.

EU Sees | Fast Recovery of Domestic Tourism

October 27, 2020 by holidayweekly

BRUSSELS: The European Union’s (EU) domestic tourism has recovered faster than foreign tourism after most countries started easing their Covid-19 restrictions by June, official figures have revealed.

In a report on Friday, the EU’s statistical office Eurostat said during the early part of 2020, the tourism industry suffered as a result of travel restrictions implemented in response to the pandemic.

Tourist numbers dropped sharply during March and April 2020, when compared with the same period a year earlier. Since June 2020, most EU countries have begun to ease travel restrictions.

However, other restrictions related to Covid-19 have remained in place, such as tourists having to quarantine on return from some foreign destinations.

These have prompted a preference for domestic tourism, which has recovered more quickly than incoming tourism.

After a drop of 93 per cent in April 2020 compared with the same month of the previous year, by July 2020, domestic tourism in the EU almost returned to the level of the previous year.

In July 2020, nights spent by EU residents in tourist accommodation inside their own country were only 22 per cent lower than in July 2019, while nights spent by non-residents were 64 per cent less than the previous year.

According to the UN World Tourism Organization, the EU saw 66 per cent less international tourist arrivals year-on-year in the first half of 2020.

Although the EU interior borders were reopened in the summer to spur the EU-wide tourist industry with precautionary measures taken, the exterior borders have remained been closed to the world.
